The supplements that have changed my life

vitaminsSupplements have played a huge role in helping me reclaim my physical and emotional health.

With their help, I have been able to banish depression, anxiety, foggy-headedness, exhaustion, poor sleep etc. AND drastically improve my sex-life, boost my happiness, increase my energy levels, and improve my cognitive skills and memory.

Shortly after I began supplementing, I will never forget telling my husband Brance, through grateful tears, that I felt A-M-A-Z-I-N-G–better than I ever had in my entire life. It was as if a fog had lifted. But I didn’t need to tell him, he could see the difference.

The difference was night and day. It felt as if a miracle had transpired and I was SO grateful. Anyone who has felt as bad as I did and has had this kind of transformation will know exactly what I am talking about.

Yet, I don’t want to paint an unrealistic picture here. The differences that Brance experienced from supplementing have been more subtle.  He didn’t feel as poorly as I did before. Brance was already clear-headed and didn’t struggle with depression or anxiety. He has mostly noticed an improvement in his energy levels and sleep.

Because I feel SO much better because of the supplements I take, I often talk about them and blog about them (hello Vitamin D3!!!). So, I often get questions about the supplements and brands I take. I thought it might be helpful for me to compile all that information in one place with Amazon links. Here you go.

My daily supplements

Raw One for Women

I began taking Raw One for Women, a Garden of Life product, several years ago. I was looking for a good multi-vitamin and discovered this one. I love that it is raw and made from whole food ingredients. It also happens to be gluten and dairy-free, if that is a concern for you. I love how they carefully crafted this multi to pair co-dependent vitamins and  minerals. FYI–the U.S. Olympic Track and Field team members take a Garden of Life multivitamin.

Brance takes their men’s formula and likes it a lot.

Garden of Life Primal Defense

This is a probiotic I started taking after I was diagnosed with UC. The funny thing is that it not only helps with gut health, it has cured my seasonal allergies. In the past, summer was a bitter-sweet time for me. As much as I loved the beautiful weather and outdoor adventures, I was miserable–a runny nose, red itchy eyes, and coughing and sneezing to boot. But because of this little probiotic, allergies are now a thing of the past for me. FYI–I take 2/3 of the recommended daily dose to help keep the cost of my supplements down. And I still get all the amazing benefits.

Vitamin Code Raw Calcium

I am very happy with Garden of Life’s Vitamin Code Raw Calcium. It contains D3, K2 (!!!) and Magnesium, all of which are critical to calcium absorption. This one has helped me in ways that I never anticipated too! The magnesium in this supplement has made the biggest difference in my sleep. I no longer have trouble falling and staying asleep. I spent my entire life, up until this point, as a restless sleeper. Thankfully, that is now a thing of the past (as long as I remember to take this supplement).

Vitamin D3

Supplementing with Vitamin D3 has hands down made the biggest difference in how I feel. I was deficient before I began taking it several years ago, so that is probably why. Interestingly, a large percentage of the population is also deficient and completely unaware. Especially those who live in the northern parts of the country. This is the brand I began taking originally and still take to this day. Although I currently get most of my D3 through my other vitamins, so I don’t always take this every day (especially in the summer months when I am outdoors more). FYI–Brance and I both experienced bad symptoms from taking oil capsule supplements. We recommend getting this in tablet form.

Closing thoughts

Please don’t feel like I am saying that everyone should be taking the same supplements as me! Every person is different and will need to choose supplements based on their specific needs.

For example, because of my UC I am dairy free. And because of that, I take a calcium supplement–something that may be unnecessary for someone who consumes 3 servings of dairy a day.

Also, perhaps you meet your probiotic needs through yogurt and fermented vegetables and you don’t have seasonal allergies. The Primal Defense supplement that has been incredibly helpful to me, may not be as helpful for you.

I recommend that you first find a good multivitamin and  go from there. Of course, I LOVE Garden of Life, but I am sure there are other fine ones out there. Although, if you are only going to do one thing, optimizing your Vitamin D3 levels would be my number one recommendation (and vitamin D3 is cheap!).

Magnesium and zinc have been two minerals that I have been big game changers for me. Like I mentioned earlier, magnesium greatly improved my sleep quality. And Zinc has transformed things in the bedroom. Pretty important things, if you ask me :).

Supplements have played a huge role in me feeling better. They can be one BIG piece of the puzzle, but there are other critical pieces as well. In my free e-book I talk about the other things that I have done to reclaim my health and happiness.

  2. Hi, Nikki! Yeah, great question! When I started supplementing for the first time, I took 5,000 IU daily and I could notice some difference within the first week. I wasn’t expecting this, so it was a nice surprise. I liken it to feeling as if a light bulb was turned on in my head. I was able to think clearer and I noticed an improvement in my mood. Within a month I was feeling amazing compared to what I had felt before. I couldn’t believe it. Good luck 😀!!

  3. Thanks for this info! I love the Garden of Life multi-vitamin and the D3 supplement. You told me about both of them. And I take magnesium too!! These have all helped me greatly. How much aspirin do you take a day? One regular or baby aspirin. I am having more aching in my knees lately. I used to take one aspirin a day. And may start back.

  4. Hi Rebecca! So good hearing from you!! And good to hear that some of these supplements/vitamins/minerals are helping you too. I take one regular (bayer–coated tablet) aspirin per day. It’s 325 mg. I initially started taking it because of some joint issues I had that go along with UC. Thankfully those issues have resolved! Now that I am doing better, I want to transition down to a baby aspirin. As a daily aspirin regimen does come with some risk. I am sorry to hear you are having aching in your knees!!

  6. Lauren, I have loved following your journey of healing and health using vitamin D and other supplements! So encouraging to read how much they have help to you. I have battled some similar symptoms, and have just started using D3 supplements. I have been looking into the Garden of Life supplements recently, so I’m thankful to read that you use them and really like the results. Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Mitch! Thank you. It’s good to hear from you! Oh man, it’s no fun having to deal with any of the symptoms I listed–regardless of their severity. And it is especially hard when you have to deal with more than one at a time. I’ll be praying that you can get at the root of the issue. I am glad to hear that you have started supplementing with D3. That’s a great place to start!

    1. Hi Joanna! That’s awesome that you take their prenatal! I just love this company and I wish I had known about them back when I was pregnant and nursing. Funny thing is that I read the founder’s book (The Maker’s Diet) many years ago back when I was in college. He happens to be a Christian.
